Roofing/Siding Company in Michigan

A roofing and siding contractor has agreed to pay $310,000 in back overtime wages and damages to 74 employees after a federal investigation.

American Classic Construction Inc., based in the Grant area, recently entered into a consent agreement with the U.S. Department of Labor Wage and Hour Division.

Federal investigators alleged the company owners violated overtime and record-keeping requirements. Employees were misclassified as independent contractors and not paid at the required time-and-one-half rate for working beyond 40 hours, investigators said.

Company leaders also failed to maintain accurate records for the number of hours worked by employees, according to the allegations.

The $310,000 going to employees is split into two parts — $155,000 for back overtime and $155,000 for liquidated damages.
